How to be a better customer (and get your needs met).

Want better service? Be a better customer! :) In the wake of a season of social distancing, it’s safe to say we’re all a bit out of practice when it comes to building great relationships. This means that it’s EASIER than ever to stand out from the crowd and make sure that you’re always a VIP Client. As empowered customers, we can help contribute to a meaningful service experience by setting a positive example.

  1. Let your Ego off the hook.

Before engaging with any sales and service staff, drop the ‘tough guy’ mantra and ground into your compassion and human-ness. Salespeople are people, too! Give them the benefit of the doubt :)

  2. Remember your main ask- and refer to it often.

Know what you want! Don’t expect salespeople to read your mind; though sometimes that’s how it feels when they’re good at their job. Be clear about what you’d like to see happen, and don’t be afraid to ask nicely :) The same rule of thumb applies to both sides of the sale: “If you don’t ask, you don’t get!”

  3. Salespeople are the best buyers.

When negotiating with a sales person, show that you’ve done your research, that you understand the limitations of the product/service, and make sure to demonstrate your commitment to starting a great relationship with the company. Good salespeople will pick up on your clearly defined needs and do their best to meet you there. No company worth your business truly wants to take advantage of its customers. Keep things positive and solutions-focused…you’ll be surprised at what a company is willing to do for you!

  4. Express your thanks.

It sounds obvious, but gratitude will get you everywhere. By saying something like, “Thank you for taking this extra time with me”, to a (likely) worn-out, weary service person, will go a long way in connecting with them on a personal level. Make sure that you have the patience to back it up, though. This is about giving a great experience on both sides of the interaction. :)

  5. Be the best part of their day.

No jokes! It feels great to make a positive impact on someone, and it’s easy to do that when it’s not the norm of expectations. Kindness & empathy are free and multiply when shared. :)
